Lesson #4 - The Five-Minute Ultimatum

I was asked by a recently placed interim to meet their new Group HR Director - a senior leader in a large energy-and-utilities business we’d genuinely enjoyed working with.

My diary said 9:00am. The sat-nav said “two hours each way.” I arrived early, prepared, and optimistic: the classic relationship-expansion meeting.

At 10:45, she finally swept in.
No apology. No handshake.
Just: “Who are you? What are you doing here? I can give you five minutes.”

It wasn’t hard to read the room. This wasn’t “busy”; it was pressure looking for somewhere to land - and I was the obvious target.

So I kept it calm and made it simple:

“Fair. Here’s the deal: if I can’t earn your attention in sixty seconds, I’ll get my coat and drive back to London.”

That landed. Her expression flickered - half fury, half recognition - like someone thinking, finally, an adult conversation.

In that minute I did three things: named the problem I could fix, explained what she couldn’t fix internally (not quickly, not safely, not alone),asked a binary question:

“Do you need the next 15 seconds back, or do we grab a proper coffee?”

Forty-five minutes later, I left with a retainer for a senior HR hire - the first retained assignment we’d ever won with that client.

Sometimes the busiest HRDs aren’t difficult - they’re overloaded. But when the music’s on, you still have to dance to the beat.

The takeaway:

Prepared confidence beats borrowed status. Pressure can create “bully energy”; respectful assertiveness disarms it - and turns a drive-by into a partnership.

Moral: Don’t beg for time - earn it, fast, then expand it.
