The Law Society of England and Wales represents solicitors, supporting the profession while upholding standards and acting in the public interest. Its Board provides strategic governance alongside Council and the Executive. At the time of appointment, The Law Society was undergoing significant transition, with several senior governance roles reaching the end of their tenure within a short timeframe. This created both complexity and an opportunity to strengthen leadership.
Appointing a new Chair of the Board was pivotal, providing stability, continuity, and a unifying presence during the next phase of organisational development and ensuring alignment across a complex governance structure.
The Chair appointment formed part of a wider governance refresh, requiring careful sequencing across multiple Board appointments. Stability needed to be maintained while enabling change. Delivered within a 12-week timeframe, the search required a rigorous and inclusive approach.
The successful candidate required strong legal and governance expertise, commercial judgement, and the ability to operate effectively in a complex stakeholder environment. A key priority was broadening diversity at Board level – extending beyond gender and ethnicity to include professional and lived experience – to strengthen decision-making while maintaining credibility across Council and the Executive.
Green Park delivered a structured and inclusive search, working closely with The Law Society to align the candidate brief and timelines. We balanced immediate requirements with longer-term governance priorities.
A broad search was conducted across legal, regulatory, public, and private sectors, targeting candidates with significant Board-level experience and leadership capability. The incoming Chair was required to be a qualified solicitor, ensuring professional standing and credibility within the profession.
Diversity was embedded throughout the process, with emphasis on varied professional backgrounds and perspectives to strengthen the shortlist. Careful coordination ensured alignment with the wider governance refresh and supported a cohesive leadership structure.
Amerdeep Somal (now Clarke) was appointed Chair, bringing extensive experience across regulation, governance, and public service, including senior roles as Ombudsman and Chair at the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman.
Amerdeep’s appointment provided immediate stability and set the tone for the wider Board refresh. It strengthened alignment across subsequent appointments, broadened diversity at Board level, and enhanced the quality of decision-making.
Green Park’s approach delivered not only a successful appointment, but also improved governance capability and long-term effectiveness across The Law Society.
