About the Company and Role

Karen Bennett, formerly Senior People Director at ASDA, was appointed in August 2025. Founded in 1861, Lincolnshire Co-operative is one of the UK’s largest independent co-operative societies, operating more than 200 outlets across Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. Its diverse portfolio includes food retail, funeral services, pharmacies, post offices, travel agencies, filling stations, and property management. Owned by more than 300,000 local members, the organisation combines commercial success with a strong social purpose, investing in community initiatives, charitable causes, and environmental sustainability.

Following the appointment of a new CEO, Lincolnshire Co-operative launched a significant transformation programme and sought to appoint a strategic Chief People Officer. The role required an experienced people leader capable of developing and delivering a people strategy that would support large-scale organisational change across a complex, multi-site and multi-category business. Equally important was the ability to operate effectively within a co-operative, member-owned culture and build strong partnerships across the organisation.

The Challenge

The search presented a unique combination of sector, leadership and cultural requirements. The ideal candidate needed experience operating within large, commercially complex organisations, while also demonstrating the adaptability and stakeholder management skills necessary for a co-operative environment.

Green Park undertook a comprehensive market mapping and search process, targeting senior talent across major UK retailers, including leading supermarket groups, alongside multi-site FMCG and manufacturing businesses. Particular focus was given to identifying leaders with experience spanning complex operational environments and large-scale workforce transformation.

The process generated a diverse and highly credible shortlist of eight candidates. Feedback from the client highlighted the exceptional quality of the field, with several candidates considered capable of stepping directly into the role. The greatest challenge became selecting between multiple appointable finalists.

The Outcome

Following a rigorous assessment process, Karen Bennett was appointed Chief People Officer in August 2025, joining from her role as Senior People Director at ASDA.

The client praised the strength and diversity of the shortlist, the professionalism of the search process, and the transparent communication maintained throughout the appointment and offer negotiation stages.

The successful placement of this critical leadership role further strengthened Green Park’s relationship with Lincolnshire Co-operative and has subsequently led to additional executive search assignments across the organisation.
