The Requirements

HSBC was looking to the future. The bank was keen to recruit a Global Head of Business Architecture, Strategy & Engagement, whose vision and expertise would pave the way for progress. It was a role with a complex and challenging remit, and HSBC wanted choose from the best. That meant digging deep into our technical knowledge, searching global hubs and activating diverse talent networks.

The Challenge

A multi-national investment bank and financial services company, HSBC continues to push the frontiers of technology and innovation. In 2021, the bank decided to hire a Global Head of Business Architecture, Strategy & Engagement. It was no ordinary technical role. The successful candidate would be building a new function to design organisational processes with data at their heart – a revolutionary approach. This work would be critical to HSBC’s success today and their development in the future. Finding the right person was absolutely critical.

With so much at stake, HSBC wanted to choose from an international shortlist – not just overseas-based talent but diverse candidates from outside the obvious talent pool. There was also the challenge of working out who could fulfil the job description: the job title ‘Global Head of Business Architecture, Strategy & Engagement’ means different things to different people and organisations. Although there were people with the same job title, they didn’t necessarily do the work described in HSBC’s remit.

The Project

The Green Park team launched an exhaustive international search, combing global locations for candidates, as well as our extensive diversity networks. The target? A professional with experience of designing strategy with deep operational understanding.

The team began by identifying organisations that had a mature approach to business architecture design and seeking out the individuals responsible for driving hands-on development. However, such people often worked under different job titles and were based in all kinds of business areas. To identify those that actually had the necessary skills and profile, Green Park’s consultants drew deeply on their technical knowledge and their understanding of HSBC’s needs. They then had to articulate the client’s vision and explain what was required. No easy task with an embryonic technical field.

The Results

Several months after the initial briefing, Green Park presented a shortlist: eight diverse candidates – three males (two ethnic minority; one LGBTQ+) and five females (four ethnic minority). HSBC were delighted with the quality of the shortlist and range of talent.

Following a rigorous five-stage interview, a candidate was chosen: Heather Hagan. Formerly [Insert Job Title] at [Company], Heather is a highly experienced professional with a pragmatic, commercial approach as well as tremendous energy. Crucially, she also has the communication skills required to inspire support and bring stakeholders with her on HSBC’s journey. Heather is now in place and driving progress and innovation through her role.
