Guardian Media Group was emerging from a period of operational transformation, with a streamlined governance model and an ambitious global digital growth agenda. The Board required a Senior Independent Director (SID) who could support the Chair, CEO, Editor-in-Chief and Scott Trust stakeholders while safeguarding the Guardian's distinctive culture and editorial independence.
This was a critical Board-level succession appointment within a complex, highly governed organisation. The successful candidate needed to combine international leadership experience with strong digital and commercial credentials, while demonstrating the judgement to build trusted relationships across the Board, executive team and Scott Trust.
Green Park partnered closely with key stakeholders to calibrate the Board brief, align priorities across the Chair, CEO, Editor-in-Chief and Trust, and deliver a targeted international search spanning media, news, broadcasting, advertising, marketing and digital platforms. Assessment focused on Board effectiveness, cultural alignment, commercial judgement, digital transformation experience and stakeholder confidence, with diverse sourcing embedded throughout the search process.
Matt Brittin was appointed Senior Independent Director, bringing global digital platform, commercial and media leadership to the Guardian Media Group Board. His appointment strengthened the Board's capability to support the organisation's digital ambitions while maintaining its editorial values. Matt was previously Managing Director of Google UK and, in March 2026, became Director-General of the BBC.
