8 seconds

big welcome to the opening event for race equality week 2022.

14 seconds
i'm raj telciani chief executive green park i'll be directing traffic this morning i'm also the chair of race quality matters
21 seconds
which i co-founded with jarvid uh thomas of the collaboratory um if you're here it means you care so thank you for joining us it's fantastic
30 seconds
to have so much support here today we've had an incredible number of people registering for this event from over 150 different towns and cities including
40 seconds
manchester birmingham newcastle belfast cardiff glasgow but also from switzerland germany italy and as far away as
48 seconds
colombia and we've always hoped that the good practice and lived experiences that we can access and
55 seconds
make free available to people can help organizations both in their in the uk but also further afield to actually
1 minute, 4 seconds
walk it like they talk it um all of the people here are parts of the race quality of matters community and we're looking to not just
1 minute, 12 seconds
collaborate with you but also help each other be uh more effective catalysts for change so before we start another bit of
1 minute, 20 seconds
housekeeping we will be recording this event for you to access later along with the slides in case you want to
1 minute, 28 seconds
get some benefit from them or share them with other people your sound will be auto disabled but if you have any questions along the way
1 minute, 36 seconds
please do put them in the chat and we will hopefully cover them during the session please tweet and use social media to
1 minute, 44 seconds
cont use our content during and after the event so we can create a big race quality week buzz you'll see our handles
1 minute, 52 seconds
on the right um remember the main hashtag for this year is action not words and we are targeting
1 minute, 59 seconds
three and a half million people in the workplace ethnic minorities and allies will get some benefit from the
2 minutes, 7 seconds
time you're investing with us this week so all of this would not be possible without the support of our partners who
2 minutes, 15 seconds
alongside green park are funding race quality matters so thank you to them a big thanks to our lifetime visual partners bt
2 minutes, 23 seconds
and their founding partners the dma hs2 and edelman who will hear more from later
2 minutes, 31 seconds
their support means as individuals who can access all of these resources for free it's a total labor of love nothing's perfect
2 minutes, 38 seconds
but on a shoestring we're affecting how organizations are held accountable and the role you play as part of this
2 minutes, 45 seconds
community has never been more important we are a not-for-profit we're very keen indeed to find further funding so if your
2 minutes, 54 seconds
organization would like to get involved please do get in touch with us to find out more so today's session as ever is going to
3 minutes, 2 seconds
be dynamic and super fast paced with three fantastic speakers we've lots to pack in and we'll close at
3 minutes, 10 seconds
10 45 and uh just for you we will be exclusively launching our new tool for
3 minutes, 17 seconds
the hashtag my name is solution so as always with these things we start with a poll
3 minutes, 24 seconds
of uh people here today took part last year 87 38 said no and the majority were
3 minutes, 33 seconds
unsure um which i think is quite telling um is your organization participating yes
3 minutes, 41 seconds
66 thank you for that i'm sure 21 percent which activity is your company doing
3 minutes, 48 seconds
during race equality week um really interesting so 41 of us are internal organizing internal events
3 minutes, 57 seconds
31 are getting involved with the new campaign my name is which we'll talk about later on um
4 minutes, 5 seconds
and then quite spread between the virtual bag big promise safe space tea break
4 minutes, 12 seconds
and only 15 are in organizations that aren't participating doing anything for race quality week
4 minutes, 20 seconds
so um 45 of our allies 51 of us are um ethnic minorities
4 minutes, 28 seconds
in the organization so good mix there and then within the kind of roles within the organization
4 minutes, 37 seconds
as you'd expect seventeen percent race weapon race network leads we've got a network of the thousands of those now within
4 minutes, 44 seconds
race quality matters 21 diversity inclusion 33 other uh hr down at 11 so
4 minutes, 53 seconds
quite interesting that seventeen percent of the people in the course see themselves as senior leaders and then when we put that into context
5 minutes, 2 seconds
how well do you think the organization tackles race equality uh with action not words
5 minutes, 9 seconds
um we've got 35 percent and not enough and 34 satisfactorily
5 minutes, 16 seconds
so i think that's a fantastic change from last year um and i'd love to see the breakdown of how many of those people are senior leaders
5 minutes, 24 seconds
are in hr in dni versus other parts of the organization but a nice spread and certainly signs of
5 minutes, 31 seconds
progress so very pleased with that and then um
5 minutes, 39 seconds
question seven how much change have we noticed the majority of us 42 have noticed a fair amount
5 minutes, 47 seconds
uh really encouragingly 13 of us have noticed a great deal and then when we look at the more negative
5 minutes, 55 seconds
end of that only four percent have said not at all and only twelve percent said not enough so clearly the will to do
6 minutes, 2 seconds
something has um increased and part of our job is to ensure that that will is now matched with increased skills to
6 minutes, 9 seconds
make sure that things actually land do you feel senior leaders and managers are committed to tackling race quality
6 minutes, 15 seconds
well given the fact that there's 17 of senior leaders here i'm glad to say there's a whopping 68 positivity on that
6 minutes, 24 seconds
um and only 9 saying no do you feel your senior leaders and managers are comfortable talking about race now this has changed dramatically
6 minutes, 33 seconds
so now we've got 42 at comfortable and last year that would be much much lower but 12 are very comfortable last
6 minutes, 42 seconds
year that would have been low single digits and so again signs of progress
6 minutes, 48 seconds
and why have you joined today's events uh mix of things here to be inspired well we can't promise that to be
6 minutes, 56 seconds
empowered well we can do something to help for that hope for change i share that but most of us are here to either learn
7 minutes, 3 seconds
or to find out more about the my name is tall so thank you for that gives us an idea
7 minutes, 11 seconds
of not who's on the call not just who's on the call but what we're here for so um thank you
7 minutes, 18 seconds
so the next slide and for the next few minutes we'll just give a bit of background to new people to the community
7 minutes, 26 seconds
um in case you haven't been to our events before java might created race quality matters in response to what we've called the moment the summer of 2020.
7 minutes, 35 seconds
we didn't want to look back and see that once again following the kind of public movement to do something more
7 minutes, 42 seconds
around diversity and inclusion um it just turned into words or just turned into corporate black screens or
7 minutes, 49 seconds
empty promises that weren't um linked to real behavior change and actions in organizations so we wanted to capture
7 minutes, 57 seconds
that energy and we created the race quality matters movement to do so basically race cars matters is about no
8 minutes, 5 seconds
more talking no more pr gesturing it's about both solutions and meaningful actions co-created with the people
8 minutes, 13 seconds
who are there to benefit oh understanding that uh talent is everywhere but opportunity
8 minutes, 21 seconds
isn't and capturing by capturing and amplifying the voice of the communities we serve united we've been co-creating really
8 minutes, 30 seconds
impactful concepts and solutions in collaboration with those with lived experience of race inequality and
8 minutes, 36 seconds
critically of change management so we aim to be a catalyst to move organizations and individuals from conversations
8 minutes, 44 seconds
to meaningful action that has real impact on their recruitment retention brand performance management the whole
8 minutes, 53 seconds
employing life cycle and of course in today's world all organizations are in a glass box and depending where you are in society
9 minutes
you're looking at that box from different angles so it's really important that what we do is not just it's amplified and the learning is
9 minutes, 9 seconds
amplified from this group into the other hundreds of thousands of people that have attended these seminars
9 minutes, 16 seconds
so the um inaugural race quality week took place last february with over 2000 organizations uh got involved it was a
9 minutes, 24 seconds
great start uh race equality week itself was created to be a place for um
9 minutes, 31 seconds
measurement and uh recollection so pulls to look at what need was needed to be a catalyst for ongoing changes
9 minutes, 40 seconds
to unite thousands of organizations and millions of individuals and critically to focus senior leaders and not just doing the
9 minutes, 48 seconds
right thing but doing things that were right for their company for their cultural change to their bottom line and for their brand
9 minutes, 56 seconds
um so to create the change we all want to see and feel we need more organizations to get
10 minutes, 4 seconds
involved and drive change across the length and breadth of the uk and beyond we need all of you to be part of it and
10 minutes, 12 seconds
to be brave courageous in telling others remember it all starts the first monday of february each year
10 minutes, 20 seconds
so the next one will be from the 6th to the 12th of february 2023 but now we're going to share a quick
10 minutes, 27 seconds
video to bring a bit of last year's race equality week into your rooms offices and maybe still homes

14 minutes, 35 seconds
um geetha subramaniam muni um from um she's the director of brighter futures and newman's children and young people's
14 minutes, 44 seconds
commissioner at the london bar of new newham please unmute yourself uh keitha thank you as a key member of the corporate
14 minutes, 51 seconds
management team gifta also leads on a number of cross corporate agendas including the senior responsible officer for racism inequalities and
15 minutes
disproportionality so a warm welcome to give that um give so keith has been given four minutes we said it'll be fast-paced and
15 minutes, 8 seconds
so please tell us why the theme action not just words and you need action in four minutes is important to drive you
15 minutes, 15 seconds
towards um race equality and what activity have you done driven over the last 18 months and what you plan to do
15 minutes, 23 seconds
in race equality week thank you very much morning everyone so my name is geetha and i am proud to be of south asian heritage i'm also proud
15 minutes, 30 seconds
to be sharing the work that we've been doing here at newham council and in the borough on tackling racism inequality and disproportionality and for the first
15 minutes, 38 seconds
time in my career i really feel things are changing and happening we are seeing and hearing from many people some of whom have rightly been cynical about the
15 minutes, 46 seconds
programme and now talking positively about the tangible changes that they are seeing but there's still lots more to do building on the last 18 months we've
15 minutes, 54 seconds
been listening to staff residents and partners through time to talk sessions the importance of talking sharing listening and hearing cannot be
16 minutes, 2 seconds
underestimated but taking action is essential there are things that have emerged that do not and should not continue and these are things that we
16 minutes, 9 seconds
just need to change the way we recruit and offer opportunities to develop so people are not excluded based on ethnicity or other protected
16 minutes, 17 seconds
characteristics is not particularly difficult and we need to do this because it will have a huge impact showing people respect by discussing the
16 minutes, 25 seconds
importance of calling out microaggressions pronouncing people's names accurately and finding alternatives to the term b-a-m-e which
16 minutes, 32 seconds
we do not use here anymore we have gone through a reciprocal mentoring program with a number of staff being engaged and we have internal champions
16 minutes, 41 seconds
and trainers supporting that reciprocal mentoring program we also have been committed to make the borough the best place for children and young people so we've supported funding
16 minutes, 49 seconds
for an education for change which is led by our head teachers in new and secondary and primary schools with resources to help support a curriculum
16 minutes, 57 seconds
boss box that really does challenge racism we've also developed procurement services that we commissioned so launching internal commissioning
17 minutes, 5 seconds
networks changing our contract standing orders and also delivering a new translation and interpretation service and we've also become a beacon of social
17 minutes, 14 seconds
change renaming our siemens brook way as camel chunchy way it just takes a while to change learning and co-designing with
17 minutes, 21 seconds
all of us across the organization and our communities takes actions together not words this coming week we have a time to talk
17 minutes, 29 seconds
with our community on wednesday which is going to have our dr joy white a local resident author and lecturer who is going to join us we have a roadshow on
17 minutes, 37 seconds
friday with our staff which is really an informal session for staff to talk more understand what they need to do and we have borrowed with pride the uh the tea
17 minutes, 46 seconds
break idea from race equality matters and we also have a launch on thursday of a video and an exhibition at stratford
17 minutes, 54 seconds
library of many artworks i think it's really important to say we are committed we are rent relentless we are focused on the whole system listening hearing and
18 minutes, 3 seconds
taking action small and large actions will all make a difference bringing about the change we need require requires our individual and collective
18 minutes, 10 seconds
commitment make what we do can to shape a future of race equality thank you that's brilliant geetha thank you so
18 minutes, 19 seconds
much and i think it's great to sort of um get your experience that you feel there is some change going on which is really important you know we need to keep this hope going and also the
18 minutes, 28 seconds
listening the learning and the taking action absolutely sums up perfectly so thank you for sharing that um uh and for those people have been asking we will
18 minutes, 36 seconds
share the race quality uh matters uh video at the um after the event and also um later in the week we'll share a copy
18 minutes, 43 seconds
of this today's event so thank you for that um what we just wanted to do is um get some other people's voice of why race equality week is important claire
18 minutes, 52 seconds
if you can place that video thank you
18 minutes, 57 seconds
[Music]
19 minutes, 6 seconds
progress and race equality is too slow so when organizations take part in race equality week it gives them the
19 minutes, 14 seconds
opportunity to accelerate their journey towards anti-racism and workplace equality it is about what we've done with our metrics what
19 minutes, 22 seconds
we've put in place how effective the programs have have been that we put in place and also gives us a bit of a reality check on on what we need to do
19 minutes, 32 seconds
better we need to do this work it's absolutely vital that the focus that's created by
19 minutes, 40 seconds
having this specific week will allow us to look into those systems and practices that we have in place
19 minutes, 47 seconds
that so far disproportionately disadvantage people who have a racial background
19 minutes, 56 seconds
[Music]
20 minutes, 2 seconds
thank you so i'm delighted to introduce our second speaker for one of our key partners the data and marketing association they'd be
20 minutes, 10 seconds
fantastic supporters um rachey so rachel al diggieri um managing director of dma please unmute yourself and a warm
20 minutes, 17 seconds

20 minutes, 32 seconds

20 minutes, 40 seconds
normal um please can you share why race quality week um and race quality is important to the dma and why you're involved as supporters of race quality
20 minutes, 49 seconds
matters and what you're planning to do during the week thank you absolutely thanks javid yeah i think it really um to start with just giving you the
20 minutes, 56 seconds
context in terms of who we are many of you might not be familiar with the dma and we're the trade body that represents the data and marketing industry we've got about a thousand corporate members
21 minutes, 5 seconds
ranging from big brands to startups tech companies data companies um as well as students and individual professionals um so our audience quite literally spawn
