The MJ: Appointment panels hold unconscious bias

With an 18% decline in the FTSE100 last year, Ian Thomas, the Chief Executive of Lewisham London Borough Council and a qualified Executive Coach and Mentor, asks why the worrying trend of a lack of BAME leadership continues to persist in the FTSE 100 and Local Government. Drawing on data from Green Park’s “Changing the Face of Tomorrow’s Leaders” report, 82% of 1,000 senior BAME employees surveyed said there is institutional prejudice against minorities in the workplace.

Ian Thomas proposes two solutions: 1) developing a supply chain pipeline of BAME managers and 2) increasing the diversity of appointment panels.
