The Requirement

The client is a Central Government department responsible for safeguarding the UK’s national security by countering terrorism and weapons proliferation, and reducing conflict. They also focus on building the UK’s prosperity by increasing exports and investment, opening markets, ensuring access to resources, and promoting sustainable global growth.

The Challenge

We were retained by the FCDO to recruit a new Lead NED and Non-Executive Director. These roles are pivotal in providing operational and strategic leadership to the Department, offering independent advice, support, and challenge to the Executive Team. Their input is crucial in shaping the Department’s work for Ministers, particularly in terms of delivery, and providing objective challenges on strategy, policy priorities, major corporate issues, and risks.

Candidates needed a blend of strategic expertise from both the private and public sectors, experience in a global setting, and seasoned expertise at both Executive and Non-Executive levels. Additionally, they required a strong track record in areas such as digital innovation, private equity, HR, and strategy setting, along with the credibility to represent Britain on the global stage.

The Result

The recruitment process, extended over nine months due to political leadership changes, involved keeping candidates engaged and informed, particularly those from the private sector. Extensive due diligence checks added further complexity.

On the shortlist, 60% were male, 40% female, and 15% from global majority heritage. Beverley Tew was appointed as the Lead NED, bringing significant experience as an Audit Committee Chair in both public and private sectors. James Bilefield, a tech entrepreneur with notable experience as an FTSE 250 and Private Equity Chair, was appointed as the NED.
