Job Ref: JM8851

Chief Executive Officer, Church Commissioners
London
£160-180K based on experience and qualifications

As one of the largest charitable givers in the UK, managing an £8.2bn investment fund, we at the Church Commissioners work to support the Church of England as a Christian presence in every community.  Each year we use the returns to facilitate growth, contribute to the common good and reimagine ministry by funding mission activities, supporting dioceses, administering the legal framework for reorganising parishes and operating the national payroll for serving clergy. Last year we posted our eleventh year of successive positive returns despite the inherently challenging markets, always operating in the vanguard of responsible and ethical investment practice.

We are now looking for a new Chief Executive Officer. Acting as Secretary to the Church Commissioners, you will be responsible for the strategic leadership of a multi-disciplinary team and support the Church Estates Commissioners in the strategic policy and prioritisation of their work.  Accountable to the Board and to Parliament for the performance of – and innovation within – the many operational and policy functions for which you have oversight, you will also play an important role in the Church Commissioners’ outward-facing communication to the wider Church and beyond.

This is an exciting, unusual and stretching role within a complex organisational system  in a volatile investment climate.  It demands the highest standards of integrity, self-awareness and discretion in order to build trust and confidence with a wide range of diverse stakeholders.

As Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, you will:

  • bring a demonstrable track record of inclusive organisational leadership of policy and operations at a senior level in the public, private or voluntary sector;
  • have a range of experience of leading positive and lasting organisational and cultural change in complex environments;
  • evidence a successful history of oversight of a financial business or function with strong compliance and risk literacy;
  • demonstrate the ability to achieve outcomes through proactive collaboration and partnership, using exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

The role calls for a practising Christian with empathy for the Church’s mission and a well-developed understanding of the workings and governance of the Church of England.

We are keen to encourage applications from people who meet these criteria across a diverse range of backgrounds, particularly those who are currently underrepresented in the Church.
