The role of The Big Society Trust is to provide governance oversight to the companies that receive funding under the Dormant Bank and Building Societies Act 2008 (Dormant Accounts Act) and to ensure that they remain true to their social mission. Within the last year, our remit has expanded to include not only established organisations such as Big Society Capital and the registered charity, Access – the Foundation for Social Investment, but also the newly established Youth Futures Foundation and Fair4All Finance. BST is a majority shareholder of BSC and the sole corporate member of the other three.

In light of its new and expanded responsibilities, the Board structure of BST has been reviewed we are now looking to appoint a new Chair and, in due course, several additional Non-Executive Directors with broad experience in the social and financial sectors.

Candidates for the role of Chair will recognise the financial and reputational demands of the profile and the public accountability of The Big Society Trust and the companies it oversees.  The Board acts as a ‘risk and control’ function to provide challenge to the Dormant Fund companies and their executive teams. To that end, the ideal Chair candidate will have the credentials and personality to lead and enhance the experience of the Board. They should be respected by others in the field of charities and social enterprises for their insight and knowledge, including around policy issues.

Given the increased remit of the Trust and the likelihood of additional future changes to our size and structure, you will need to bring demonstrable experience of navigating and working through complex governance structures and in doing so, promoting a culture of openness, trust and inclusion. We are looking for a strong communicator to engage with, influence, and develop candid relationships at the most senior levels, showing evidence of cultural sensitivity, high quality interpersonal skills, and a consensual style. As with any high performing Board, we are particularly keen to find individuals able to demonstrate integrity and sound judgement in complex environments.
