The Client
Our client, a rapidly expanding construction business is looking to recruit a new Head of Employee Relations to establish and implement the Employee and Industrial Relations strategy for the organisation.

The Assignment
The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing arrangements for measuring and managing the performance of the principal contractors and their supply chains in delivering their employee relations and industrial relations contractual requirements:

  • Maintaining regular communications with the Programme Directors, their direct reports, including the accountable Project Managers and the Principal Contractors and their supply chain.
  • Monitor and report the Principal Contractor’s fulfilment of their ER contractual requirements and put interventions in place where they are non-compliant
  • Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of trade union structures, and industrial relations  issues  and activities relevant to the project
  • Put in place arrangements for alerting all relevant parties to the potential for unrest and ensure steps are taken to mitigate these
  • Work with the company’s security team to ensure that potential risks are identified and management  plans are in place to mitigate any impact on the programme
  • Assist with the preparation of media and other communications required in response to any ER activity, including data gathering
  • Ensure principal contractors and their supply chains fulfil their contractual requirements in connection with the  Employee Relations Works Information
  • Support the implementation and management of the company’s ethical sourcing recommendations
  • Support other relevant activities in connection with the delivery and ongoing development of the company’s skills, employment and education strategies, including managing, reporting on and publicizing principal contractors’ and their supply chains’ performance

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Skilled negotiator
  • Experience in leading employee and industrial relations in any large complex organisation.
  • Have led organisational change teams in the delivery of change
  • Experience of leading a major change programme and managing employee relations in this context
  • Management of multiple trade unions with differing agendas
  • Ability to influence and shape decisions of others
  • Ability to develop, implement and manage best employee relations practice across the supply chain
  • In depth knowledge of employment legislation.
  • Knowledge of organisational structure and work practices of trade unions
  • Detailed understanding and practice of human resources activities
  • Broad knowledge of responsible procurement, ethical sourcing and related corporate responsibility principles and practices.
